Daum Nancy "Birch Scene" Cameo Glass Vase

$12,500
A beautiful example of a ‘paysage en été’ (summer landscape), this Daum Nancy “Birch Scene” Cameo Glass Vase depicts a languid summer scene, blending soft yellows and blues at the opening of the vase and giving way to lovely shades of green around the lower half. Clusters of delicate birch trees emerge from the tapered base, acid etched and enameled in detail with a whimsical rendering of the leaves encircling the top of the vase. In the background, wooded islands float in a sea of mottled green; their hazy reflection evoking the idyllic quality of a summer afternoon through cameo glass.

The Croix de Lorraine (Lorraine cross) was an icon of resistance after the 1871 partition of Lorraine in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian war. The upper horizontal bar represented Metz and the lower bar represented Nancy, indicating a separation between north and south. Daum Nancy glass often features a signature with the cross, indicating both the geopolitical reality but also signaling the hope of a future reunification.
