Amethyst and Basse-Taille Enamel Gold Plaque Necklace

$12,500

Dating from the 1870s, this English Renaissance Revival gold plaque necklace features a large oval-cut amethyst, basse-taille enamel, and natural seed pearls. The oval-cut amethyst is framed by delicately shaded enamel shells, and joins a necklace of enamel rosettes alternating with beaded infinity-form links, accented by natural seed pearls and old mine-cut diamonds. Sitting lightly above the collar bone, this elegant and vividly-colored necklace is a graceful ornament to highlight and elongate the neck.

The late 19th century fascination with the Renaissance was inspired as artisans turned away from the machine, looking back to the Renaissance studio artist for design inspiration. This period jewel conveys not only a revival of the Renaissance spirit, but of renewed love and appreciation for work done by the highly skilled hand and devoted artist.
