Many prominent American families transferred their business to Raymond Yard when he opened his doors in 1922. The Rockefellers were one of the families that turned to Yard for his acumen in sourcing important diamonds and colored stones. Yard was well connected with connoisseurs in Paris, where the most valuable gems were historically traded. One of these, the fabled gem dealer and lapidary Raphael Esmerian, came to New York under Yard's wing before World War II, and the two built an informal but long-lasting partnership that solidified Yard's reputation.
