Rembrandt Bugatti "Les Yack au Repos" Bronze Sculpture
This pair of Yaks in repose present a powerful and serene image of strength and companionship in the rugged landscapes they inhabit. The bronze medium gives the statue a rich, dark patina, with subtle variations in tone that highlight the depth and contours of the yaks' thick, woolly coats. Bugatti has intricately rendered the fur, with each strand appearing almost lifelike, cascading down their broad shoulders and flanks, giving the impression of movement and the natural flow of their hair in the wind. Their massive heads, crowned with long, curved horns, are lowered as they graze side by side on the sparse vegetation, using their wide muzzles to sift through the grass. The horns, which can stretch wide and curve upwards, are a distinctive feature, giving the yaks a formidable appearance, yet their behavior towards each other is gentle and cooperative. They pause in their grazing to nuzzle each other, providing warmth and reassurance in the vast, often unforgiving landscape.

When Rembrandt Bugatti made his visit to the Antwerp Zoo in 1909, the zoo had an enclosure for a pair of domestic yaks, descendants from an original pair acquired in 1880. Originally native from the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal and Tibet, they became critical for the garment industry, with the finest yak-hair shawls produced in Amien, France. The yak was first domesticated by the Qiang people, who lived along the Tibetan Plateau borderlands, near Qinghai Lake. Records from the Han dynasty indicate the Qiang had a "Yak state" from 221 B.C. to 220 A.D. This "state" was a trade network that predated the Silk Road.
