Clément Massier 'Cachepot Chaudron'
Regular price
$25,000
This monumental Cachepot Chaudron with vegetal ornamentation exemplifies the early collaboration between painter Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer and ceramist Clément Massier. With its inventive organic form, the vessel—identified in Massier’s sales catalog as Cachepot Chaudron—appears to soften under the radiant sunlight of the French Riviera, where it was created. Beneath the golden luster glaze, etched and painted grape leaves and tendrils transform what might once have been a utilitarian object into a work of refined decorative art.

Massier’s studio was located in Golfe-Juan, a small village near Cannes on France’s southern coast. He was renowned for his “reflets métalliques” glazes—iridescent finishes achieved through a complex, multi-step process. Each piece was first bisque-fired, then glazed and re-fired, before being coated in a clay slip containing metallic compounds. A final firing in a reduction kiln produced the thin metallic film that gives the work its shimmering, iridescent quality. Contemporary accounts note that achieving the desired layers of iridescence could require up to five separate firings.
