Agathon Léonard "Danseuse au Cothurne" Bisque Ceramic Sculpture

$10,500

By Agathon Léonard, and titled "Danseuse au cothurne," this arresting bisque ceramic sculpture is from the artist's "Le jeu de l'écharpe" series. This particularly lovely figure is one of the "la danse"—or "the dance"—set, originally produced and cast by Sèvres, and presented by the artist at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. The incredible texture of the dancer's rippling "fabric" robes brings her elegant movement to life, as her unique posture catches the eye.

"Le jeu d'écharpe," created by Agathon Léonard at the turn of the 20th century, consists of fifteen sculptures of young women in various poses; some women dance with scarves, others hold musical instruments, or carry flaming torches. Each of the fifteen dancers is unique in terms of her pose, hair style, and dress.
