Daum Nancy "Winter Scene" Vase

$12,500

This vibrantly colored "Winter Scene" vase by Daum Nancy features a carefully detailed forested landscape executed via techniques of etching and enameling. A bright amber sky signals nightfall in this frozen, wooded scene in which bare trees are touched with frost and a hard ground is only partially visible beneath old snow. Unlike in other winter scenes, this composition in glass features a densely populated forest, with a tangle of branches visible far off into the distance.

Though seldom addressed in landscape works before the turn of the 20th Century, the depths of winter became a favorite subject for Impressionist and Art Nouveau masters alike. Both schools of artistry appreciated the simplified lines, extended perspective and particular nature of light offered by winter scenes and created masterpieces capturing their beauty.
