Tiffany Studios New York “Clematis” Table Lamp
Tiffany’s Clematis shade displays blossoms in radiant tones of pink, purple, blue, and green set against a background of richly mottled confetti glass in complementary hues. Louis C. Tiffany held a particular fondness for the clematis—a native climbing vine that framed one of the fountains at his Laurelton Hall estate. Long associated with the charm of the old-fashioned cottage garden, the clematis also resonated with the ideals of the Colonial Revival movement. The shade rests on a base adorned with a complex, radially symmetrical grass-basket motif that rises in interlaced patterns along the stem before unfolding into fiddlehead ferns. Each blade is finely engraved with lateral veins, revealing both remarkable naturalistic precision and Tiffany’s deep sensitivity to botanical form.
